Metallomembrane endopeptidase definition - medical term
(MME) A molecule that is also known as CALLA (common acute lymphocytic leukemia antigen), a cell surface marker for the most common form of acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). CALLA is also present on normal tissues and is abundantly present in the kidney on the glomerular epithelium.
To confuse matters, CALLA has been found to be identical to neutral endopeptidase ((NEP). CALLA/NEP is the target of antibodies directed against podocytes, cells through which blood is filtered in the glomerulus of the kidney. Mutations that truncate (shorten) the MME gene, which encodes CALLA/NEP, have been found to cause the neonatal form of membranous nephropathy.
The MME gene is on chromosome 3 in region 3q21-q27. Terms (and abbreviations) synonymous with metallomembrane endopeptidase include common acute lymphocytic leukemia antigen (CALLA), CD10, enkephalinase, membrane metalloendopeptidase (MME), membrane-associated neutral endopeptidase (NEP), and neprilysin.
